Do I need the Book Publishing System?
Yes. The add-on installs into the repository the system set up and uses its projects, its listing rules, its pre-flight and its after-launch tools.
Do I need the Fiction add-on as well?
No. The two add-ons are independent. This one works on the system alone. If you have both, they install side by side and share their audiobook and cover tools.
Can I use my own illustrations?
Yes, on any page. Each picture is checked against the size it prints at 300 pixels per inch (below 200 it is refused, between 200 and 300 you are warned), its shape and colour are prepared for the page, and for a picture book the contrast behind the words is checked. For a coloring book, a drawing in black pen, scanned or photographed flat, is cleaned into crisp black lines and checked for the child's age. You confirm you own the pictures or have a licence to use them in a book.
What are Claude's pictures like?
Simple and clear: flat colour for picture books, black line drawings for chapter books, bold outlines with wide spaces for coloring books, drawn to one palette and one character sheet so the characters match on every page. You approve the first page before the rest. They are friendly pictures, not painted art.
What makes the coloring books right for the age?
Every page is measured: the thickness of the outlines, how many spaces there are to colour, and any space too narrow for a small hand, which the proof shows in red. A toddler book (ages 2 to 4) wants very thick outlines and big spaces; a kids' book (4 to 8) can have more detail. The pages print on one side of the paper, with a page to test colours on the back of each picture, so markers spoil nothing.
What makes the activity books different?
Every puzzle is made by the system and checked before it reaches a page: each maze has exactly one way through, each word search has every word exactly once (and no rude word hidden among the letters), dot-to-dot numbers never sit on each other, and each spot-the-difference has exactly the number of differences its title promises. The answers are drawn for you at the back. Those are the very things parents complain about in activity books.
Why do picture books need Kindle Create?
KDP makes a picture book's Kindle file in Kindle Create, its free program for Windows and Mac, from a PDF or page images with the words already on them. The add-on makes exactly that, with every word set large enough to need no pop-up zoom, and walks you through the program's screens.
Can the books be audiobooks?
Yes. A picture book goes to ACX with a human narrator, because KDP's virtual voice needs a reflowable eBook and a picture book is fixed layout. A chapter book can use either: KDP's virtual voice, an invite-only beta, or ACX. Coloring and activity books are paperbacks, so they have no audiobook. Claude prepares the script and the square cover; it never records audio.
Which books come as paperbacks?
Chapter books, coloring books and activity books are paperbacks, printed in black and white with a full-colour cover. Picture books are made as colour Kindle eBooks, with a print proof to look at.
Is there a page limit?
No, only Amazon's: up to 776 pages for most paperbacks on cream paper or 828 on white (590 on the white paper of the 8.5 x 8.5 and 8.5 x 11 sizes coloring and activity books use), 75 to 550 for a hardcover. A chapter book gets its own page ceiling when you start it, and every chapter is written to fit. Picture books, coloring books and activity books are planned to an exact page count from the start, so the book comes out the length you chose.
What can a children's book earn?
Every book is different, so we make no income claims. What the add-on does is give each book its best start: the shelf researched, the book checked for the child's age, the pictures consistent, the puzzles working, clean files. How much it earns depends on the book, the pictures, the price, promotion and your persistence.
